The Senses of Plants / Die Sinne der Pflanzen

3. March – 2. June 2024

Opening: 2. März 2024, from 17:00 at Villa Merkel in Esslingen am Neckar

The thematic group exhibition “The Senses of Plants” shows research-based, non-anthropocentric perspectives on the senses, abilities and intelligence of plants from the point of view of international young artists under the artistic direction of Julia Katharina Thiemann at Villa Merkel in Esslingen am Neckar. In the diverse artistic works by Anais Karenin, Marisa Benjamim, Suzette Bousema, María Castellanos and Alberto Valverdes, Patricia Domínguez, Špela Petrič, Miriam Simun, Saša Spačal, Anton Vidokle, Zheng Bo and others, alternative ways of interacting with plants and trees are aesthetically presented, conveying ecological, philosophical and, not least, social and political issues.

Tasting En Plein Air –  Edible workshop

“Tasting En Plein Air” (“Verkostung unter freiem Himmel”) is inspired by the open-air painting of the Impressionist movement (from French: en plein air: “im Freien”). In her workshop, artist Marisa Benjamim combines the beauty of nature with the sensual experience of taste. During a walk through the green islands of the Kulturforum, the participants collect eatable pigments/plants under her guidance, with which they draw and then taste the artworks.

Free to attend, the workshop will be held in english.

Yūgen APP – Porto Design Biennale

2 June – 25 July 2021

Instructions of Yūgen App propose different modes of thinking and feeling different arrangements of planetary coexistence, invite us to forge intimate kinships with nonhuman life-worlds that dwell in the blurred boundaries between technology and ancestral wisdoms and force us to reflect on endangered nature and our relationship with it by proposing face-to-face encounters with nature and non-human beings.Theexercises propose that we listen—and observe, smell, touch, speak—to the land, the water, the air not with the aim of distantly understanding, grasping, or exploiting, but to resonate, to vibrate, to be together.

Amuse-bouche. Der Geschmack der Kunst

19 February – 17 May 2020

Is the taste of art sweet, sour, bitter, salty or even umami? What role does our sense of taste play in social interactions and as an artistic material? Museum Tinguely continues its series on the senses in the arts with a group show bringing together work by international artists who address our sense of taste as a possibility for aesthetic perception. Featuring works by, among others, Janine Antoni, Marisa Benjamim, Otobong Nkanga, Emeka Ogboh, Shimabuku, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann and Elizabeth Willing.

Part of the  project »Licht Luft Scheiße [Light Air Shit]. Perspectives on Ecology and Modernity« proposes a diverse series of twentieth-century concepts and practices that resonate with our current ideas of sustainability. They are both historical references and points of departure for novel or updated reflections on alternative ways of living in the globalised world. In light of the on-going destruction of Planet Earth we must fundamentally rethink our relationship to the biosphere and all non-human beings.
